About UFM

Established in 1964, Uganda Fishnet Manufacturers Limited (UFM) is one of the largest manufacturers of fishing nets in East Africa with a production capacity of over 750 metric tons per year. UFM employs more than 180 staff and contributes to the socio-economic development of Uganda, including natural resource conservation.

UFM is one of the many companies under Industrial Promotion Services (IPS). IPS is the industrial and infrastructure development arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED), which is member of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) - a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities in specific regions of the developing world.

Today, UFM is a major player and leading manufacturer of best quality fishing nets using the latest technology with the view to consistently satisfy customers’ needs and expectations at very competitive prices. In this regard, UFM aims at being recognised as the leading manufacturer of high quality fishing nets in the sub-Saharan region, with focus on usability and fish conservation as a sustainability measure .

Mission statement:
With the foregoing, the mission of UFM is
"to achieve global competitiveness in the manufacture and supply of fishing nets with zero defects."

Key objectives:
UFM produces fishing nets and twines, and provides secondary services that consistently satisfy customers’ needs, requirements and expectations. The major objectives of UFM are below:

1. Manufacture high quality fishing gear for use in Sub-Saharan Africa;
2. Contribute to fish stocks conservation measures by manufacturing fishing nets compliant to industry best practices (fish sustainability);
3. Contribute to an improvement in the quality of lives of fishermen by providing them with a high quality product that ensures income generation today and tomorrow;
4. Contribute to employment creation in Uganda; and
5. Contribute to skills transfer in the fisheries sector.
